Oh hey happy day! My Musselburgh Hats are finally finished, blocked and ready to go for next winter.
This little project of mine has resulted in each of my family members having a new hat to keep their ears warm when the weather calls for it – which will be here before we know it! In total, I knit 6 of these hats this spring. I used KnitPicks Stroll yarns for the first 5 and then wanted to see the difference in using Palette for the 6th.
Check out my Ravelry project pages for information about colorways, needles I used, all the things!
Knitpicks Stroll
Knitpicks Stroll yarn is an affordable fingering weight yarn available in a huge collection of colorways that is perfect for socks, shawls, hats, and even sweaters! This yarn is so versatile and the softness, longwearing, easy care nature of it has created its #1 spot for me.
The stats:
- Superwash wool blend gives it the super softness + washability + toughness for things that require this quality like socks
- 75% fine superwash merino
- 25% nylon
- Fingering weight
- Comes in 50g balls that are 231 yards (while other versions of Stroll like this one come in 100g skeins)
- Machine washable (although I highly recommend skipping this and handwashing your knits – throwing this yarn into your washing machine is an option and won’t totally ruin your project)
- Has amazing reviews
Knitpicks Palette
KnitPicks Palette yarn is another affordable fingering weight yarn that comes in all the colors you could possibly dream of. The options for things to knit or crochet with this yarn are endless, much like Stroll! Palette is different in that it’s non-superwash wool and doesn’t contain nylon. It has a woolier feel to it, which while it is important to note this difference – it doesn’t make it less desirable than a superwash yarn. They both have their place in knits and I’ve come to love the wooly feel of nonsuperwash yarns.
The stats:
- Non-superwash wool gives this yarn a rustic, wooly feel that is sure to keep you warm and cozy
- 100% Peruvian Highland Wool
- Fingering weight
- Comes in 50g balls that are 231 yards (same as Stroll)
- Handwash only
- Wool fibers in this yarn seem to soften a bit with woolwash. I use this one that I purchase on Amazon. It smells heavenly!
- Fantastic reviews
Takeaway from knitting a Musselburgh Hat in Stroll and Palette:
Both hats were knit in the exact same fashion:
- Same cast-on method
- Same needles
- Same needle size
- Same hat size/stitch count
Drum roll please…
The hats came out practically the same! The palette hat is *slightly* longer I think, but it doesn’t make any noticeable difference when I wear it.
What’s your favorite yarn to use when knitting hats? Have you tried KnitPicks Stroll or Palette? What do you think?
